Pipes named president of Groundwater Resources Association of California
William V. Pipes, principal geolotist in our Fresno office, has been named president of the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRAC). Formed in 1992, GRAC is a statewide, not-for-profit organization of more than 1,300 scientists, geologists, engineers, planners, educators, attorneys, hydrogeologists and other professionals dedicated to the protection and improvement of groundwater in California.
Pipes is a geologist and hydrogeologist with more than 30 years of experience who has managed the AMEC Geomatrix office in Fresno since 1991. His projects have ranged from the corrective-action design for petroleum pipeline releases to the assessment and remediation of chloride in groundwater. He is the founding president of GRAC’s San Joaquin Valley branch, and in 2003, he was elected to GRAC’s statewide Board of Directors.
“I am honored to have been selected at this critical time for the management of the precious resource beneath our feet,” Pipes said. “Statewide groundwater use is expected to increase with population and the effects of climate change. A recent report by the Center for Investigative Reporting revealed that the water supply of more than two million Californians has been exposed to high levels of nitrates.”
GRAC’s mission is to promote, primarily through technical leadership, the informed and proper management and preservation of the state’s groundwater resources. The organization does this through legislative lobby days, numerous conferences, symposia, workshops and publications, including the quarterly Hydrovisions newsletter.
