AMEC Signs Pact with Lombardo to Advance Wastewater and Nitrate Treatment Technologies
AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, has signed a teaming agreement with Lombardo Associates, Inc. (LAI) to develop projects involving innovative wastewater and groundwater treatment technologies, especially for nitrate nitrogen removal.
“This agreement equips us with the tools we need to treat nitrates – the most common groundwater contaminant across the United States – economically in the subsurface,” remarked Murray Einarson, principal hydrogeologist with AMEC Geomatrix’s Oakland, Calif. office. He noted that a recent report by the Center for Investigative Reporting revealed that the water supply of more than two million Californians has been exposed to high levels of nitrates over the past 15 years.
Specifically, the agreement focuses on public and private sector clients who would benefit from decentralized wastewater treatment/reuse and/or groundwater remediation using Nitrex™ technology for the low-cost, long-term treatment of dissolved contaminants, especially nitrate nitrogen. Nitrex™ is an innovative reactive material patented by the University of Waterloo and licensed exclusively to LAI. The efficacy of Nitrex™ for the removal of nitrogen has been recognized by the U.S. EPA as part of President Obama’s Executive Order regarding restoration of Chesapeake Bay.
LAI, headquartered in Newton, Mass., is a nationally recognized expert in the conceptualizing, planning, engineering and permitting of creative decentralized wastewater treatment and reuse solutions for clients in the public and private sectors. AMEC’s Earth & Environmental Division offers particular strength and innovative techniques in the water and wastewater engineering and groundwater cleanup arenas.
“Under this agreement we will promote further technological exchanges and business development between our two companies and seek project opportunities where the combination of our capabilities can provide a high-value solution to a prospective client’s environmental challenges,” remarked AMEC Executive Vice President Tony Daus from the company’s Newport Beach, Calif. office.
