Oakland Volunteers Sort Baby Clothes for Loved Twice Charity
Fifty boxes worth of new and gently used baby clothes were sorted and packed in less than two hours recently by 30 volunteers at AMEC Geomatrix’s Oakland, Calif., office.
Senior Hydrogeologist Lisa Ehlers organized the event. “We sorted and boxed the baby clothing during our lunch break so that those with after-work commitments could participate,” said Lisa. “Some came for 20 to 30 minutes and some stayed for the whole two hours. It was very rewarding.”
A portion of the items was donated by the Oakland AMEC staff, while the majority was collected from various locations by the nonprofit charity Loved Twice. The charity, which serves the East Bay area, offers “boy” boxes and “girl” boxes to underprivileged newborns upon their departure from the hospital.
Loved Twice Founder Lisa Klein attended the event and shared some touching stories of mothers leaving the hospital who had little more for their new babies than what they received from Loved Twice. She said she was enormously pleased with—and grateful for—AMEC’s generosity. The boxes were later taken to Children’s Hospital in Oakland and Welcome Home Baby in San Pablo, Calif.
As a special gift to newborn babies, the Oakland knitting club contributed several newly made baby hats and blankets to the boxes. “The little hats were so tiny and so cute,” said Lisa. “It’s hard to stop making them. It was so much fun, but very gratifying, too,” added Senior Technical Editor Nancy Sutherland.
Thanks go to Lisa Ehlers for heading up the project and also to everyone who contributed. This was a success in every way.
Loved Twice has donated more than 10,000 pounds of recycled baby items to newborns in need since its start in 2007, according to the charity’s Web site (www.lovedtwice.org).
