AMEC Geomatrix grants to aid water-quality efforts in Montana
PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA, USA - AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, announces today that scholarship grants have been awarded through its AMEC Geomatrix operations to two University of Montana Department of Geosciences graduate students. The grants will enable the awardees to conduct research and field work aimed at improving the quality of Montana’s water resources.
UM master’s degree candidates James Johnsen and Tabetha Lynch were each awarded a $5,000 AMEC Geomatrix Student Award in Applied Water Science. The awards will enable each to conduct important water-science research this summer.
Johnsen will research the impact of the Milltown Dam removal in the Clark Fork River. He will sample river-bottom sediment during runoff as part of research into the nation’s largest Superfund cleanup project. Lynch will research the occurrence, movement and final disposition of selected pharmaceuticals in groundwater, focusing on the Missoula Aquifer.
“We’re allowing them, through these grants, to do important research that will further their education and benefit the state of Montana rather than to spend the summer flipping burgers or waiting tables,” says K. Bill Clark, senior hydrogeologist at AMEC Geomatrix in Missoula and a UM alumnus. AMEC also operates two offices in Helena.
Recipients of the annual AMEC Geomatrix scholarship grants are selected by a UM Geosciences Department committee. Selection is made on the basis of grade-point average and research pertaining to the goals and mission of AMEC Geomatrix and the research and educational mission of the Geosciences Department in applied water science.
AMEC Geomatrix participates in a number of other university scholarship programs – University of Minneapolis, University of California at Berkeley and University of Waterloo in Canada, just to name a few. Additionally the company often supports student papers at professional conferences.
