Marion Thatch Named Marketer of the Year

AMEC Geomatrix's Marketing Director Marion Thatch was named the “Sandy D’Elia Marketer of the Year” last week by the country’s largest chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) at a Founders’ Award ceremony held at the San Francisco Omni Hotel. SMPS honored Marion with its top award for her extensive work and leadership both voluntarily through their organization and for her work professionally through Geomatrix Consultants.

Marion is responsible for the development of all corporate marketing communications most notably leading a rebranding effort which has proven to be very successful in establishing a sense of corporate identity within the Firm. She has demonstrated the merits of comprehensive approaches to communications, press releases, client management and the use of sophisticated marketing and business development activities to reinforce meaningful business success. Early in her career a graphic designer, Marion attributes her marketing education to SMPS whose goal is to be the premier educational resource for the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) practices.

Within her chapter, Marion was responsible for co-developing and leading the SMPS San Francisco’s Mentoring Pathways Program designed to promote long-term leadership and career development through one-on-one mentor-protégé relationships. Additionally, she served as President of the Chapter in 2005-2006 and as Chair of the 2003 National SMPS Conference in Phoenix.

Marion earned a BA in Business Management from St. Mary’s College (Moraga, CA) and completed three years of study in Landscape Architecture from California Polytechnic State University (San Luis Obispo, CA). An avid traveler, her most recent personal accomplishment was completing her open water diving certification with her husband John of 32 years.

Sandy D’Elia, an influential marketer and business strategist for planning and design firms, was known for his wit and intellect in the development industry as well as his gregarious personality and passion for life, friends and family. A founding member of the San Francisco Chapter of SMPS, D’Elia had worked as director of development for EDAW and wrote the 1989 book Advanced Marketing Techniques for Architecture and Engineering Firms, which remains a definitive book on the topic.
