AMEC Geomatrix GIS Expert's Work Featured in Animation for National Geography Awareness Week

Serkan Bozkurt, a Geographic Information System (GIS) expert with AMEC Geomatrix, Inc., has contributed his expertise to the National Geographic Society in the making of a new video intended to build geographic knowledge of Asia as part of this year’s Geography Awareness Week, November 11–17, 2007. “A GIS Journey” is a 10-minute video that explores the fascinating geography of Asia through GIS software, a system of computer programs that use the power of geographic, spatial location to gather, analyze, and visualize vast amounts of information. Since 1888, National Geographic has worked to build and spread geographic knowledge, and this year’s celebration of geography, accessible at http://mywonderfulworld.org, continues more than a century-long endeavor to bring an understanding of geography to people around the world. Mr. Bozkurt, whose work has been featured in numerous publications and videos, was a member of a GIS animation team responsible for creating the video. “I am very excited to be a part of an effort that promotes the field of GIS as an exciting career choice for today’s young students,” he says. “National Geographic has done a wonderful thing in creating the My Wonderful World Web site for students, parents, and teachers.”

Mr. Bozkurt has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey and the Active Fault Research Center for the last five years producing 3-D GIS animations to conduct and convey scientific research for projects related to the earthquake risk in Tokyo. Before joining Geomatrix, he was part of the earth science team known as Team Tokyo, which consisted of 22 members from nine scientific organizations. Their work assembling high-quality data sets and applying cutting-edge technologies resulted in 15 articles in leading scientific journals.
